Weekend Threesome: Foo Fighters, Seven Mary Three, The Meters

Back again with more tunes to keep the weekend rolling, ’cause we love you like that. Click on each file to download it, and enjoy. And if you’ve got recommendations (or MP3s) for us, drop us a line at tips AT sportsgonesouth.com and hook us up!

Foo Fighters, “Tie Your Mother Down”: Back when I was in high school and playing guitar with religious fervor, I had dreams of starting a band and weaving in dozens of carefully-chosen covers amid my genius original compositions. Well, the music thing never really got off the ground–you need actual talent to make it in the biz, who knew?–but it turns out Dave Grohl was thinking the same things. Nobody short of a Holiday Inn lounge bad does more covers than the Foos, and all of ‘em sound pretty damn good. Here’s a live cut from their 2006 Hyde Park performance of the Queen classic “Tie Your Mother Down,” featuring a couple members of Queen (No, not Freddy Mercury.).

Seven Mary Three, “Last Kiss”: Seven Mary Three are William & Mary grads, which immediately gives them cred with me. They also had the balls to name their band after Ponch & John’s CHiPs call sign, and their breakthrough album (American Standard) after a brand of toilet. And while they got lumped in as one of the faceless post-Pearl Jam grunge armada thanks to their hit “Cumbersome,” they always had a lot more going on than that, and now they’re back with new music. Sounds good, huh?

The Meters, “Fire On The Bayou”: The fine music blog Aquarium Drunkard is running a series of New Orleans-based music posts in honor of the upcoming Mardi Gras. This here’s the lead cut off a Meters concert at the Bottom Line from 1977. It’s greasy, dirty, stomp-ass New Orleans funk; get this one and then go over to AD to get the whole concert. Then start chuckin’ beads.

(Ye olde disclaimer: songs are for sampling purposes only, and they ain’t available for long. If you like ‘em, support the artists. And if you’re the copyright holder, email us at the address above and they’re gone.)
