Weekend Threesome: Black Crowes, The Hold Steady, Opie & Anthony

By Jay Busbee | January 11, 2008

Hey there, back with another installment of Weekend Threesome, three bits of audio lovin’ to get your weekend going right, now with a special bonus: downloadable tunes! That’s right! Now you can get the actual songs, not just a link to the iTunes store! Wonderful thing, this here Internet! Make with the clicky, and start your rockin’!

“Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution,” The Black Crowes–You gotta love the Crowes. This tune, from their upcoming release Warpaint, sounds pretty much exactly like everything else they’ve ever done, gobs of Saturday night blues/Sunday morning gospel shot through with sin-and-salvation lyrics, aimed at a wild-child girl that singer Chris Robinson can’t decide if he loves or loathes. Hallelujah, come join the jubilee!

“Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window,” The Hold Steady–This here’s an old Dylan number off the soundtrack of 2007’s “I’m Not There.” Pretty much everything The Hold Steady does ends up sounding like a mishmash of Detroit and the Jersey Shore, and that’s not a bad thing. One of the most subtly terrifying tunes Dylan’s ever written, if you want to view it that way.

“Italian Storm Chasers,” Opie & Anthony Shorts, XM Radio Podcasts–This one’s a bit of a misnomer, since it’s actually a video podcast advertising a radio service. (Wha…?) Anyway, we’re huge fans of the Opie & Anthony show. The non-initiated will remember them as the radio duo who ran a contest in which a couple listeners had sex in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. There’s a lot more to O&A than, say, the 21st-century Howard Stern, who’s gone from edgy to creepy as he leers over girls a third of his age when he’s not whining about how the world’s mistreated him (other than paying him half a billion dollars, of course). Anyway, this podcast is a series of short video cartoons animating some O&A bits, like a meeting with Robert DeNiro or this one, featuring a horde of Italians chasing tornados in Brooklyn. I think O&A–for that matter, any radio show–is best taken in large, unfurling chunks, but these bits give you a good idea of their vibe.

And that’s it! Have a good weekend, all!
