SEC Bellies Up To The Buffet; Big Ten Gets The Leftover Crust

By Jay Busbee | January 3, 2008

buffet.jpgIf there’s one thing southerners like more than college football and weepy songs about momma, it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet. Cornucopias (cornucopiae?) where everything up to and including the napkins and utensils is rolled in batter and deep-fried could make even Jay Gatsby raise a glass of sweet tea to the inventor of the steam table. (We put a serious hurting on The Bulloch House in Warm Springs right before the New Year, ourselves.)

We were reminded of this Southern phenomenon when we read of a study by Scout.com which reveals that the SEC’s practice of “oversigning” recruits–that is, piling up more than you could possibly (and legally) sign–gives it a serious recruiting edge over the rival Big 10. Seems the Big 10 can only oversign by three recruits, and must explain itself for each one, whereas the SEC can sign pretty much anybody off the street–but could end up bumping them if the school ends up with more recruits than available scholarships. In other words, the extra recruits become the equivalent of vegetables at the buffet–you took ‘em on with the best of intentions, but hey, when there’s stuffing, chicken, and cake to fit in, well, something’s gotta go.

By the way, the SEC’s won 6 bowl games to the Big Ten’s 2 so far. Just sayin’.

sad to see we care more about conference superiority than the futures of young men. sec may be the best in football but clearly worst in academics.

Rogue, I can’t disagree with you on that. But until college football starts a top-down revamping of its entire m.o. with regard to academics, no major conference can claim any real superiority in the classroom.
