Weekend Threesome: Sebastian Bach & Axl Rose, Metallica, Led Zeppelin
By Jay Busbee | November 30, 2007
It’s heavy-hitters week on Weekend Threesome, where we give you three great tunes, linked only by the fact that they’re great, to get you through the weekend. (Links take you to the iTunes store unless otherwise noted.) We do it ’cause we love you. Really. But not in that way. Back off, slick.
“Stuck Inside,” Sebastian Bach with Axl Rose: Perfect late-period heavy metal–ominous riff, whomp-rock bass, keening vocals, what-the-hell-are-they-screeching-about lyrical content. Poor ‘Bas–he’s waited seven years to put out a new solo album, and Axl’s stealing all his thunder with just a little bit of yowling on three songs. This one’s the best of the lot, by far.
“Brothers In Arms,” Metallica: Taken from Neil Young’s Bridge School charity concert of this past October, this one’s available on Metallica’s own site, along with the other surprising covers from that performance: Garbage’s “Only Happy When It Rains” and the funk-rock classic “I Just Want To Celebrate,” among others. Metallica’s pretty faithful to the Dire Straits version here, but it’s always good to hear them stretching in different directions–particularly when it means they aren’t suing their fans over downloading.
“Immigrant Song,” Led Zeppelin: You know it, you love it, along with “Satisfaction” and “Born To Run” it’s one of the greatest opening riffs in history. When I was in Colorado on a high school ski trip, I remember one of my housemates sitting by a tape recorder listening to the opening riff, stopping, rewinding, and listening again, repeating ad infinitum. Yes, he was under the influence of some perception-altering material at the time. These days, this is my son’s new favorite song, and he thrashes merrily in the back seat when I crank it up. None of that “Wheels On The Bus” crap for us, y’all.
And that’s it! Have a great weekend!
