Weekend Threesome: The Hold Steady, Ozomatli…and John Tesh?

By Jay Busbee | May 18, 2007

Rolling out a new feature here at SGS. We’re music freaks around here — you could start playing all the songs in our iTunes right now, and you literally wouldn’t hear a repeat before August — but we leave the fulltime music blogging to others better suited for it. But we got some love to share — three tunes a week, rolled out every Friday. The links take you to iTunes, where you can listen to a preview and, if so inclined, buy the songs. And at the end of every month, you’ll have a new volume of the coolest mixtape in the history of the universe.

John Tesh, Roundball Rock

John Tesh - Victory: The Sports Collection - Roundball Rock

Wait! Wait wait WAIT! Don’t run screaming just because this is John Tesh, and just because this song has an unbelievably cheesy title. This here is the theme to The NBA on NBC, and without a doubt the finest TV sports theme ever. Just Call Me Juice did a great post recently demanding the return of Roundball Rock, and we wholeheartedly agree. We hear this song, and we’re right back in the ’90s, waking up hung over and eating sacks of Hardee’s burgers and Jerry’s Pizza while we watched MJ, Barkley, Dream, the Admiral, Ewing, and all the rest. Good times.

The Hold Steady, Stuck Between Stations

The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls In America - Stuck Between Stations

Our current favorite rock band, these cats borrow the themes of vintage ’70s-era Springsteen — i.e. cars, chicks, hating your dad, raging against the darkness — but don’t sound like some tired retread band. Rock will never rule the music world again, but as long as cats like The Hold Steady are, uh, holding steady, all will be well.

Ozomatli, Magnolia Soul

Ozomatli - Don't Mess With the Dragon - Magnolia Soul

Ozomatli’s one of those crews like Parliament/Funkadelic or the Polyphonic Spree or the Daniel Snyder-era Redskins where you slam fifty-seven people together and expect them to produce as a unit. (P-Funk mastered this; the Redskins didn’t come close. And listening to the Spree is like being trapped in a cotton candy machine.) This tune here’s the perfect kickoff to your weekend; you listen to it and you’re already two beers into the party.

Enjoy the weekend, folks!

John Tesh? I never knew who did that song … now I wish I didn’t. Watching the NBA on NBC will never be the same. Then again, I never do watch the NBA on any channel, so whatever. Just waiting for football to start up again.

Aw, you’re insane, bro. Once you weed out the lame-ass teams — like, uh, the Dallas Mavericks — the NBA’s an amazing sport.

And put your website link on there, dude! Gotta get folks headed to Smoky South BBQ!
