Braves And Bulldogs Fans, Clear Off The Bookshelf!
By Jay Busbee | April 26, 2007
So we’ve been sitting on this news for the last few weeks while our people dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s, but we’re now ready to announce it: we’ve signed a two-book contract with Sports Publishing LLC to write what we hope will be the definitive accounts of a couple of our favorite teams, the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs:
-Aces and Golden Boys will chart the entire history of the Braves’ recent playoff dynasty, starting back around the time Atlanta traded journeyman pitcher Doyle Alexander for a Tiger rookie with the peculiar name of Smoltz, running right up to — well, to next year, probably.
-God Is a Bulldog will recount Georgia’s 1980 Championship season through the prism of the single greatest play in college football, the 93-yard Buck Belue-to-Lindsey Scott pass to defeat Florida and preserve an undefeated season.
Now, don’t go camping out at your bookstore just yet; we’ll see a couple Super Bowls before Aces hits, and four Independence Days before you can buy GIAB. Aces and Golden Boys is scheduled for publication in the spring of 2009, and God Is A Bulldog will drop in July/August of 2010. (We’re thinking they’ll still beat Guns n’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy to the shelves.)
We’re going to be spending the next few years immersed in all things tomahawk and red-and-black, but loyal SGS readers shouldn’t fret that our attention will be too focused on the dead-tree crowd. We’re still wrapping our heads around this, but chances are we’ll use this as a de facto workblog, giving you the book equivalent of DVD extras as we spend the next forty months putting together 200,000 words on the Bravos and the Bulldogs.
And so it begins!

Please be kind to Rafael Belliard. That’s all I ask.

Don’t forget Biff Pocoroba. What a great name.

Ah, Biff Pocoroba. He’s no Rusty Kuntz, but he’s still pretty damn good.
Sadly, for this book he’ll probably only get a passing mention in the early pages. But you can’t talk Braves without talking Biff! PocoROOOOOOba!

I’ll give you a dollar to name the Georgia follow-up in spring 2012 “Urine Bombs and Jim Harrick Jr. - Things thrown out in Georgia”
Also, if God is a Bulldog - How do you explain Hershell Walker being in Minnesota while Dallas wins 3 Rings?
I also demand a chapter in the Braves book about Mark Lemke.

Ok, I only have 273 books to read before spring ‘09. I can do this. One book every two weeks. Gotta clear off the shelves.
By the way, Jay, hopefully you can solve the why Greg Maddux never pitched to Javy Lopez mystery. I never understood that.

Well, I’m impressed about the book deal, no doubt. But I’m way more impressed that you have people.
Seriously, this is great news. Congratulations!

Eric–Thanks! As long as my people don’t go and get me in trouble Vick-style, all will be good.
Jordi–For whatever reason, Maddux never felt comfortable with Javy. Never could understand it myself, but Cox would even bench Javy during playoff games. That always stunned me. And I WILL be finding the answer.
Adam–The Lemmer is right at the top of my interview list. Hopefully within the next few weeks.
I had a urine bomb once at Georgia. Worst drink ever.
