The Night Steve Spurrier Drove Ol’ Dixie Down

By Jay Busbee | April 15, 2007

flagdress.jpgIn what will surely be seen as a betrayal at least as bad Juliette pretending to be Jack’s pal on Lost — that bitch! — Steve Spurrier has decided that the Confederate flag has no place at South Carolina’s capitol:

“My opinion is we don’t need the Confederate flag at our Capitol,” Spurrier said Saturday. “I don’t really know anybody that wants it there, but I guess there are a lot of South Carolinians that do want it there.”

This news is sure to send hardcore Confederacy wingnuts into another round of they’re-takin’-our-heritage apoplexy. However, before everyone starts loading up the breech rifles, fillin’ the canteens, packin’ the hardtack, and buryin’ Grandma’s silver, there are a couple things to consider:

–Not to question Spurrier’s humanity, but there may be an ulterior motive here.

–Whatever Spurrier wants, Spurrier gets, and woe to those who stand in his way.

(No, this picture has absolutely nothing to do with the story, except for the flag. But we love it anyway.)
