Sports Gone South (America): Raftin’ The Amazon!
By Jay Busbee | March 30, 2007
For those of you bored by your mundane little American on-demand lives — or if your team gets bounced from the pennant race by the end of the summer — we’ve got the scratch for your itch: The Great Amazon River Raft Race 2007!
From the race organizers:
The Great River Amazon Raft Race is a three-day, 132-mile race down the mighty River Amazon from the small town of Nauta to the city of Iquitos. The four-person teams will be paddling near-identical lightweight balsa wood log rafts.
Yes, balsa wood, the same material used to make the fragile little model airplanes we used to crush with one hand. And since all of our impressions of the Amazon River are colored by movies and TV, we can only assume that in addition to piloting a craft more delicate than a tongue depressor, you’ll also be fighting for your life against evil alligators and blowdart-shooting locals. On the plus side, there’s always the chance you’ll run into some indigenous talent equivalent to the young lady at left.
The rafts get rollin’ in September. Anybody who goes, be sure to send us a dispatch. And like Chef says…don’t get off the boat.
