Ladies and Gentlemen, Your First 2007 Mornhinweggie Nominee!
By Jay Busbee | March 6, 2007
It’s never too early to start talking about end-of-year awards, and around here we’ve got our own little slice of dumbass honor called The Mornhinweggies. Named for former Lions coach Marty Mornhinweg, who won a tiebreaker coin flip, decided against all reason to kick away, then watched the other team march down the field and kick a game-winning field goal, they recognize all that is stupid and moronic in the coaching profession. Last year’s honorees included the Little League coaches who threw at a cancer-stricken kid and the Lions coach (what is it with Detroit?) who drove up to a Wendy’s buck-freakin’-nekkid.
We’ve already had a couple of potential nominees — Nick Saban’s flight from Miami to Alabama and Bobby Petrino’s similar exodus from Louisville to Atlanta — but since those could be considered potential Douchebag Moves, we’ll need further time to review. This, ladies and gentlemen, this is your first clear-cut Mornhinweggie nominee:
Don Nelson, coach of the Golden State Warriors, whose temper tantrum at the end of the Warriors’ recent game against the Wizards — with the Warriors up by two at the time — gave Agent Zero three foul shots with no time on the clock. You do not give Gilbert Arenas the sword and ask him not to slice your throat. The Hibachi sank all three free throws, game over. (Aside: Why exactly is the China Post reporting on a midseason NBA game?)
Take comfort, Don. You lost the game, but you’re right in line for a Mornhinweggie.
