kellyleak.jpgSo we’re perusing yesterday’s Oscar nominations, as is our duty as good pop-culture Americans. And as usual, we’ve got interest in a smattering of the films (The Departed, Last King of Scotland) and couldn’t give a rat’s ass about most of the other, prim little period pieces or snapshots of suburban ennui. (Still no nomination for Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the haunted, tormented Wolverine? For shame, Academy! And this year, he got his flesh peeled off his body!)

Anyway, one name in the supporting actor category caught our eye: Jackie Earle Haley, from “Little Children,” one of those films we’re supposed to see but probably won’t. Jackie Earle Haley…hey, wasn’t he the voice of Darth Vader? (Nope, James Earl Jones.) The guy who shot Martin Luther King? (Nope, James Earl Ray.) The guy who wrote “Roots”? (Nope, Alex Haley.) The guy who’s always trying to get right with karma Thursday nights at 8 on NBC? (Nope, Earl Hickey.) The guy who won a championship ring with the Bulls because he could babysit Dennis Rodman? (Nope, Jack Haley. Closest of the lot, tho.) So who the hell is he, and why does his name sound so familiar? One click over to IMDB gave us the answer:

Kelly Leak got nominated for an Oscar!

Screw Mean Streets or Easy Rider, The Bad News Bears was the seminal movie of the ’70s for our generation. And Kelly Leak was our God. This is huge news, like if Rush came out of nowhere to sweep the Grammys in ‘07 (including the R&B categories). We can only hope that Mr. Earle Haley will park his way-too-large-for-his-skinny-body motorcycle in one far corner of the Shrine Auditorium, watch the proceedings with a surly eye, hurl a baseball from the corner and hit Renee Zellweger in her Botoxed face, then peel out down the red carpet. Then, we can surely die happy.
